Laymen can also understand the types of mechanical processing

There are many types of machining methods, which can be adjusted according to the material of the workpiece or other factors. This article will share several common machining methods. Come and learn about it!

    Common machining methods

There are many methods of machining, which will be adjusted according to the needs of different materials and products. Traditionally, the most common ones are turning, clamping, washing, planing, and grinding. With the continuous improvement of machinery, electroplating, wire EDM, casting, powder processing, and forging have been developed, etc. How do these processing methods work?

    Turning

As shown above, turning enables the shape of the workpiece to meet the requirements by the rotation of the workpiece and cutting through the turning, also the parallel and intersecting operation of cutting tools will generate inner, and outer cylindrical surfaces and circular conical surfaces separately. If feeding along the curve or applying a forming turning tool, a surface rotating will be generated. In addition, thread surfaces, end planes, and eccentric shafts can also be processed by turning.

    Milling

This machining method is mainly based on the rotation of the tool, and the cutting formed by the edge on the outer surface of the milling cutter, or the end face edge of the milling cutter can be divided into horizontal milling and vertical milling according to the plane. If you want to obtain cutting speed and improve productivity, you can increase the rotation speed of the milling cutter, but the cutting in and out of the milling cutter teeth is prone to cause vibration which makes a limitation of the surface quality.

    Planing

Planning is to use the tool to make a reciprocating linear motion to cut the workpiece. The speed of this method is relatively low, resulting in low productivity, but the quality of accuracy and surface roughness is more stable than milling.

    Grinding

Grinding is mainly using the grinding wheel and the abrasive tool to process the workpiece. The abrasive particles on the grinding wheel are used for cutting, carving, and sliding through rotation operation. After a long time of operation, the abrasive particles will gradually become dull, making the cutting particles becomes bigger, therefore, the grinding wheel needs to be adjusted regularly.

    Drilling

Drilling refers to the process of using a drill to machine holes on a workpiece, and it is usually carried out on a drilling machine and a lathe. It can be applied in drilling, reaming, and tapping. Although it has the advantage of a higher metal removal rate, it often encounters problems with chip evacuation, cooling, askew, and surface roughness.

    Non-conventional machining

This kind of processing is a mechanical processing method that is different from traditional cutting. It uses physical methods (electricity, sound, light, heat, magnetism), chemical, and other methods to process the workpiece to achieve removing, deforming, changing properties, or plating shape of demand. For example, friction stir welding, which uses a high-speed rotating tool to friction stir the weldment, generates heat energy, plasticizes the metal material to reorganize the crystal lattice, and achieves the welding of the weldment.

In addition to the processing methods mentioned above, there are many more actually. The most important thing is to consider many aspects when choosing a mechanical processing method, in order to find a suitable method, so that the quality or precision of production can have satisfactory results.
